What is a Timber gallows bracket and why use one?
A timber gallows bracket is a structural component used in construction to support a projecting beam, such as a balcony, canopy, or overhang. It is typically made of timber and consists of two perpendicular arms that extend from a vertical post or wall. The horizontal beam rests on the arms of the bracket, creating additional support and stability.
Here are a few reasons why timber gallows brackets are used:
- Aesthetic appeal: Timber gallows brackets can add a decorative element to the exterior of a building. They often feature intricate designs and can enhance the architectural style of a structure.
- Structural support: Gallows brackets provide essential support to projecting beams, helping to distribute the weight evenly and prevent sagging or structural failure. They transfer the load from the beam to the supporting wall or post, ensuring stability.
- Increased space utilization: By using gallows brackets, architects and builders can create cantilevered structures that extend beyond the main wall or post. This allows for the creation of balconies, canopies, or other functional spaces without the need for additional support columns or posts.
- Versatility and adaptability: Timber gallows brackets can be designed and manufactured to suit specific architectural requirements. They are available in various sizes, styles, and finishes, making them adaptable to different building designs and aesthetics.
- Traditional construction methods: Timber gallows brackets have been used in construction for centuries and are often associated with traditional and heritage buildings. They provide a link to
