A finial is an ornamental decoration, typically made of metal, wood, stone, or ceramic, that is placed at the top or end of an object, such as a fence post, used in a structure such as a door canopy or roof ridge.

 Finials can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and can be very simple or very intricate in design. For example, a fence finial may be a small, simple design, while a roof finial may be a large, decorative shape that adds a flourish to the gable.

Finials can serve both decorative and functional purposes. They may be used to add a decorative touch to an object or to help stabilize it. For example, a finial in a door canopy can add structural integrity to the design while a finial on a roof ridge can help prevent water from seeping under the roof tiles.
